Jazz Vespers in the Valley occurs on select Sundays each month at 3:30pm.  Typically, our services last for an hour, and in typical Northwood fashion, we offer a time of conversation over homebaked goods prior to Vespers.  The service provides a time where jazz meets the Spirit in a time of reflection and prayer. The suggested donation is $10, or pay-what-you can.  Please see the poster for further details!

THE SODA CRACKERS - These three long-time musical cohorts serve up a menu of music steeped in rootsy rhythms, panfried in traditional country, then stewed in a gumbo of bluegrass, jazz and western swing.

Here is a link to their website. Give them a listen and you will be excited to hear them as we are!

SUE MALCOLM - vocals and guitar
Sue has performed bluegrass, country, old-time, western swing and children’s music for many years, and is enjoying the opportunity to stretch out and include more jazz in her repertoire. A founding member of Vancouver’s Pacific Bluegrass and Heritage Society in 1980, Sue has been leading her legendary Slow Pitch Jams for beginners since 1995 at venues in BC, Alberta, Washington and Oregon. She has helped scores of adult students get started with music making, through classes, jams and workshops in BC, Alberta, Washington and Oregon.

“Her voice is clean, sweet and smooth and she moves between bluegrass, gospel, swing and country with effortless grace. Dead-on pitch and a straight ahead vocal style lends credence to the jazzier tunes.” - Victory Music Review.

“Music seems to flow naturally from her, and not for reasons of commerciality or ego. She simply has a way of connecting with people that is genuine.” - Penguin Eggs.

DON FRASER - vocals, lead guitar and resophonic guitar
Don’s abilities run the gamut from country and bluegrass to swing and gypsy jazz. As part of the duo Swingamajig with son Michael, Don performed at jazz festivals around North America and Europe. Don has won numerous awards including first place at the Western Canada Guitar Championship. He is well respected in Western Canada as a teacher, performer and arranger, and has been a regular instructor at the Georgia Strait Guitar Workshop, Moveable Music School, BC Bluegrass Workshop and Vancouver Island Guitar Workshop.

STU MacDONALD - vocals and upright bass
Before becoming a 'roots' bassist, Stu was well known in the Vancouver music scene as a member of such bands as Crawfish Fiesta, Helen Gone and The Beverly Brothers. Making good use of his razor-sharp wit, Stu made it his mission as a member of Highrise Lonesome, to revive the role of the bassist-comedian so popular with early bluegrass and country bands. The Soda Crackers provides even more opportunity for Stu to utilize his vast musical knowledge, which can include singing on occasion.
