South Van Big Band will be our musicians for this year’s CHRISTMAS VESPERS. SVBB is a big band jazz orchestra based in Vancouver, BC, Canada. The band’s musical repertoire covers a diverse range of styles, including blues, Latin jazz, rock, funk, bebop, fusion, and contemporary music, all arranged in modern big band style. With over 13 horns, a full rhythm section, and a vocalist, SVBB impresses with the powerful sound of a big band through arrangements of well-known artists such as The Beatles, Santana, Steely Dan, Radiohead, and Pat Metheny, as well as famous big bands like Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, and others. The band also enjoys performing new modern compositions and arrangements by Dr. Greg Johnson, a saxophonist, composer, and clinician based in the San Francisco Bay Area and current Director of Jazz Studies at Marin School of the Arts. In recent years, the band has begun exploring and performing music by contemporary Canadian composers.

It’s a musical moment of reflection and joy.
Whether you’re a jazz fan or just curious, this is your chance to experience something truly special.

Typically, our services last for an hour, and in Northwood fashion, we offer a time of conversation over home baked goods prior to Vespers.

The Jazz Vespers service provides a time where jazz meets the Spirit in a time of reflection and prayer. The suggested donation is $10, or pay-what-you can.

Everyone is welcome.

We can’t wait to see you there.
